How to Get the Most Out of Your Family Food Budget

A family food budget can go a long way in helping you save money. Here are a few simple steps you can use to create and follow a food budget.

Plan ahead

Many people head to the store and just start pushing their cart around. As they do they fill their basket will all sorts of things. Many of these things are impulse buys and aren’t necessarily needed.

These impulse buys can be prevented by planning ahead.
Sit down at the beginning of the week and create a menu for the week. After you have your menu, create a shopping list. Write down all the items you will need to complete the meals on your menu for the week.

Collect Coupons

If you go ahead and choose Sunday as the day you plan your menu and list, grab the Sunday paper while you do it. Go through the paper after you have your list and see if there are any coupons for the items you have on your list.

Another great place to check for coupons is online. There are several sites that will allow you to print coupons directly from their site.

Buy Store Brands

You can save a lot of money by purchasing store brands. Many items you normally buy will have a similar, lower priced store brand alternative. You don’t have to do this for everything on your list, but for stuff like condiments it makes sense.

Keep Track

Keep detailed records of what you buy and what you eat each month. This will help you fine tune how much you are spending. It will allow you to see where you are wasting money. It will also help you determine if you need more or less food.
As the months go by you’ll begin to really nail down your family food budget and that is when you’ll really start to see the benefits of the planning you have done.
